Liposuction, sometimes referred to as lipoplasty, is a safe and effective way to reduce or eliminate unwanted fat deposits from around the waist, hips, thighs, arms, and chin. The procedure is meant to remove stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. Choose Beverly Hills plastic and reconstructive board-certified surgeon, Dr. Firouz, who can perform this procedure on multiple locations of the body to create a visibly slimmer and more proportionate figure. He has experience in performing liposuction for male patients as well, while maintaining and enhancing the masculine features of the body.
Who Is a Candidate for Liposuction?
Liposuction is a fat reduction procedure that targets areas of the body where fat accumulates but that are difficult to shape and tone with diet and exercise. It is not meant to replace a healthy diet and daily exercise. As a general rule, a patient undergoing liposuction should be in good health and near their goal body weight. Liposuction can be used to remove stubborn fat from almost any place on the body, including the:
- Upper arms
- Chin
- Knees and Thighs
- Buttocks and Hips
- Ankles and Calves
- Back and Abdomen
How Is Liposuction Performed?
Depending on the number and the size of the areas to be treated, liposuction may be performed under either general or local anesthesia. The procedure itself can take as little as thirty minutes or as long as several hours. The doctor inserts a thin tube called a cannula through a small incision in the skin that allows the excess fatty tissue to be suctioned from under the skin. The doctor will control the amount of fat that is removed by squeezing and massaging the tissue. Following the surgery, a dressing is placed over the incision. The bandage supports the tissue as it heals and helps to prevent excessive bleeding and minimize swelling.
Recovery Following Liposuction Surgery
Recent advancements and developments in liposuction techniques and technology allow for quicker recovery times. The doctor will provide instructions for caring for the incision site following the procedure. It is also important to rest as much as possible and to keep strenuous activity and unnecessary movement to a minimum. Depending on the extent and location of the areas treated, it may be necessary to wear a compression garment for the first few weeks following surgery. Any post-surgical discomfort can normally be managed using over-the-counter or prescription medications. The doctor will determine when it is appropriate to return to work and other daily activities.
