Choosing a breast implant that complements body shape and size is essential to achieving the best results during a breast augmentation. Implants are filled with standard silicone, a highly cohesive silicone, or saline. Each type of implant has advantages and drawbacks based on the patient’s body type and the desired results.

Saline Implants:

As the name implies, saline implants are filled with a saltwater solution that is completely natural and easily absorbed by the body in the event of a leak or rupture. The downside is that some saline implants can look and feel more like a water balloon than natural breast tissue. The new Ideal® saline implant uses internal chambers for structure and support so that it more closely resembles the look and feel of breast tissue.

Standard Silicone Implants:

Standard silicone implants have a soft, jelly-like consistency. Since the silicone is semi-solid, it is able to maintain its shape better than saline and is less likely to ripple under the skin than saline. The appearance and texture of silicone implants closely resemble breast tissue, making them a more popular choice than saline.

Cohesive Silicone Implants:

The latest generation of breast implants, such as the line of Natrelle® implants by Allergan, uses a firmer silicone that is similar to a gummy bear in consistency. These implants are denser, heavier, maintain their shape in any position, and resist rippling.
