Is Breast Reconstruction Right for You?

You may want to consider breast reconstruction with our Beverly Hills practice if you had a mastectomy and do not have any medical conditions or illnesses that may impair healing. If you want to restore your breast and body image in a positive and healthy way, breast reconstruction with Dr. Firouz may be right for you.

Before Surgery: Tissue Expansion

If you are having implants placed as part of your reconstruction, Dr. Firouz may recommend tissue expansion in the weeks and months leading up to surgery. The process involves inserting a silicone balloon beneath your skin and gradually filling it with saline. This will stretch the skin so that it can accommodate a breast implant.

The Breast Reconstruction Procedure

Breast reconstruction is a highly personalized procedure. The ideal approach will depend on several factors, including your body composition, frame, and desired results. During surgery, Dr. Firouz may utilize one or more of the following approaches:

  • Flap techniques involve repositioning your own muscle, fat, and skin from another area of the body to create or cover the breast mound. This may result in a more natural feeling breast and can be necessary when little tissue and muscle remain following a mastectomy. Incision lines will appear at both the donor and reconstruction sites.
  • Breast implants are typically placed after tissue expansion for several months. Dr. Firouz can place silicone or saline breast implants based on your preferences and desired outcomes. In this case, the incisions will only appear around your breasts.

Your Recovery

Your recovery will depend on the extent of your reconstruction. Some swelling and discomfort will occur wherever incisions are placed. You will need to wear a support bra around the clock during the initial healing process.

Most patients return to light activity within a few days and feel significantly better within a couple of weeks. However, it is common for swelling and bruising to persist for up to two months. Dr. Firouz will provide a detailed timeline of what you can expect during your post-operative visits.

Immediate or Delayed Reconstruction

In some cases, you may be able to have an immediate reconstruction that is performed at the same time as your mastectomy. The benefit of this approach is fewer surgeries, less scarring, and less skin loss.

However, it is very common to have a delayed reconstruction after the mastectomy. Although this requires additional surgeries, it may be optimal if you require additional cancer therapy after your mastectomy, such as radiation.

Breast ReconstructionFAQ

Can breast reconstruction be performed in conjunction with nipple reconstruction?

Ideally, these surgeries are performed a couple of months apart. The breast reconstruction should occur first. It is important that you have healed from your reconstruction and that all swelling, discomfort, and bruising is gone to ensure the best possible outcome.

Does insurance cover breast reconstruction?

Depending on the coverage you have, your insurance company may cover a portion. If your breast reconstruction is due to illness, it is very likely that a percentage will be covered. However, the only way to get a definitive answer is to contact your insurance company.

Can I enhance my implant size after reconstruction?

In general, yes, you can enhance your implant size after reconstruction. However, a plastic surgeon needs to evaluate your skin’s integrity after the mastectomy.
