Rhinoplasty Techniques: Open or Closed

There are two basic methods for performing nose surgery: open and closed.

The open technique requires an external incision and allows for maximum visibility and control. With this approach, your surgeon will place the incision between the nostrils (along the columella).

The closed technique involves fully internal incisions. That means there are no visible scars, but the potential adjustments may be more limited.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Your surgeon will perform your rhinoplasty under general anesthesia. The surgery can last anywhere from one to three hours, depending on its complexity.

To begin, your surgeon will make the incisions discussed during your initial consultation (open vs. closed). They will then raise the skin so that he can access your nasal bones and cartilage. With the utmost precision, they will adjust the underlying structures to artfully shape your nose.

Once your surgeon completes the reshaping process, they will replace the skin and close the incisions with stitches. They will then apply a splint, bandages, and gauze to minimize nasal movement and support your healing process.

Your Recovery

Rhinoplasty requires a special recovery period to ensure that your nose heals properly. The gauze will need to remain in your nose for up to two days, and you will need to wear your splint for about two weeks. You may experience swelling and bruising around your nose and eyes. It can take several weeks for these effects to improve.

RhinoplastyFAQ

Am I a candidate for rhinoplasty?

If you want to adjust the appearance or function of your nose, rhinoplasty can help. As long as you are in good physical and emotional health, and have realistic goals for your surgery, you may be considered a candidate for this procedure.

How long will swelling last?

Post-surgical swelling is common after rhinoplasty and it can take a while for it to disappear completely. The most prominent swelling will occur during the first six weeks. By the three-month mark, the majority of your swelling will be gone. However, some very minimal swelling may persist for up to one year after surgery.
