Understanding Laser Treatments with Dr. Firouz

Your skin has two layers: the outer layer (epidermis) and the inner layer (dermis). CO2 lasers work by delicately stripping away very thin layers of your epidermis with minimal damage to the surrounding tissues.

By removing the epidermis, the laser removes its imperfections as well, including wrinkles, scars, sun damage, and more. In addition, the process signals your body to begin its natural repair processes, producing fresh collagen as your epidermis heals.

Your CO2 Laser Experience

To begin your laser treatment, Dr. Firouz will apply local anesthetic and sedative medications to keep you comfortable. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, he will use the laser to remove ultra-thin layers of skin.

If you are only treating part of your face, the procedure can take less than an hour. If you are rejuvenating your entire face, it can take up to two hours. Once the treatment is done, Dr. Firouz will apply a dressing, and you will return home to rest.

After Your Laser Treatment

The dressing will need to stay in place for 24 hours. After that, you will need to follow Dr. Firouz’s instructions for keeping the area clean to prevent scarring and ensure a smooth healing process. Most men recover completely from their laser treatment within 10 to 20 days.

Laser Treatments for MenFAQ

How painful is CO2 laser skin resurfacing?

It is not a severely painful experience, but there is some discomfort involved. The level depends on the depth of resurfacing and your unique pain tolerance.

Is the treatment safe?

Yes. CO2 lasers have been used since the 1960s and have a very strong safety profile. All treatments carry some risk, but you can mitigate it by working with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has years of experience performing laser treatments safely. When complications do arise, they may include infection, cold sore reactivation, hyperpigmentation, skin burns, and more.

Am I a candidate?

CO2 laser skin resurfacing is ideal for men who have relatively shallow scars, wrinkles, and lines. It is also best if you do not get cold sores frequently and you are not in the midst of an active acne flare-up. As long as you meet those criteria, and you are in good physical and mental health, you will likely be a candidate.
